The Bible and the Bible Alone, the Rule of Faith and Duty Print E-mail

When the editor of the Advent Review and Sabbath Herald placed this phrase on the masthead of the paper in August 1854 as the first principle of doctrine taught by the paper, he certainly did not realize how popular the Bible would be 150 years later. Today no book approaches it in sales. It is translated into 438 languages (the New Testament into an incredible 1,168) and the numbers are already outdated before they are written down. The work of translating and distributing the Bible is one of the largest concerted human efforts of all time.

Professional specialization in the study and propagation of the Bible is the largest and essentially the oldest educated profession. In the present sceptical age it still ranks first. No other area of scholarship can compete with Bible-related studies, and churches multiply through every city in the world.

The Bible is the only religious classic that is and has long been accessible to nearly the entire population of the globe. That fact alone is a powerful argument in its favour. If there is a God who has revealed his will to humankind in a book, it stands to reason that book would be widely available. No other religious book even begins to compete with the Bible in accessibility.

While other religious books are of long-standing influence, they fail in such accessibility. The Chinese classics are largely known only in China. The same can be said for the Vedic literature, which is mostly known only by the priestly caste of India. Furthermore, such books, especially the Vedas, are practically impossible to translate, since they depend so heavily on puns and word-play. Even the Qur'an loses most of its charm and much of its meaning in translation. Only the Bible is susceptible to clear and effective translation to other languages, making it accessible to all.

Historical criticism of the Bible text has produced a mass of research detail that has given ammunition to those who wish to attack the Bible and claim that it is corrupted. But the fact is that the mass of research proves just one thing. No book of antiquity has been preserved so well as the Bible, which exists in thousands of ancient manuscripts and manuscript fragments. Those who criticize the details are failing to see the forest for the trees, the miracle of the preservation of the Bible. It is unique in history.

A number of arguments can be made for the validity of the Bible. Archaeology has proven it correct time and again. The Ebla, Nuzi, and Mari tablets have silenced critics of the Bible in regard to the patriarchal period. Advances in history consistently show the Bible correct. The Assyrian king Sargon was unknown, except in the Bible, until the discovery of his palace in Khorsabad, Iraq, which even confirmed his conquest of Ashdod as reported in Isaiah 20. Fulfilment of Bible prophecies adds to the believer's assurance. The prophecy upon which most others is founded is the prediction of the return from Babylonian captivity at the end of seventy years in Jeremiah 29:9-12. The book of Daniel is based on that prophecy and is remarkable in its prediction of the course of events from that time to the very days we live in.

But archaeology, history and prophecy are neither unique to the Bible nor central to its message. What is most important is that the Bible is a book that contains the revelation of the will of God for humankind. It tells us what we need to know to live as God wants us to.

Catholic, Orthodox and Oriental Christian churches make the Bible, along with tradition, a source of doctrine and practice. They claim that the Bible can be interpreted only by the church, and require people to conform to the church's reading of the Bible. Historically, they have relied heavily on allegorical readings, which of course no one could come up with unless the church guided them. But anyone reading the Bible can see that it is a straight-forward book that can be understood for the most part by anyone with a grade-school education.

A central principle of Protestantism has been to reject tradition and accept the Bible only as the source of doctrine and practice. But Protestantism stopped at merely reforming a few of the most obvious excesses of Christianity. It still contains many non-Biblical teachings based on human traditions, such as Sunday worship and the annual festivals of the church, the belief in the Trinity, and the belief in the Atonement finished on the cross. All of these beliefs have remarkable parallels in ancient paganism and can be proven from the Bible only by forcing the texts. The Protestant failure to use the Bible only, and to reject the pagan elements in the church, has resulted in the confusion that is Christianity today.

Many people have despaired of ever making sense of the confusion. But the confusion can be dispelled by a systematic and careful reading of the Bible. By using rational, literalist, and systematic rules of interpretation, the central issues of the Bible message become clear. However, it is not something that can be accomplished by one individual alone. A simple, logical and systematic system of Biblical beliefs was achieved by a group of Bible students in 1848 and the following years by applying a special list of rules of interpretation coupled with fervent prayer and fasting, and confirmed by the testimony of Ellen White, whose visions guided and comforted believers after the Great Disappointment of 1844. The fourteen rules of interpretation used by William Miller and applied in the Sabbath Conferences and later. These principles for reading the Bible are just as valuable today as ever. They are reasonable and understandable. Those who agree to apply them will find that all significant disagreement about the Bible and what it means will disappear.

But the unique feature of the Bible is the fact that it alone claims that God has spoken to humankind audibly, directly, and publicly. While the Bible is filled with appearances of angels, dreams and visions, as well as prophets and leaders claiming to speak on behalf of God, we do not need to take such things on trust. No other religious classic claims to contain the very words of God spoken directly and publicly to millions of people so that each one could hear and know the message for himself. Jesus is proclaimed to be the beloved son, in whom God is well pleased, on at least three occasions. But the witnesses were few at those events. Nothing compares to the giving of the ten commandments on Mount Sinai, when millions of people from the major center of civilization of that day, Egypt, heard and understood the voice of God directly and audibly.

Since the Bible contains the ten commandments, it is a unique book. No other classical book of religion makes such claims at all, claims to direct and public revelation. So there are no competitors. On the basis of the most objective criteria to be found, it is only reasonable to take the Bible into consideration in what we believe and do.

i believe that is what happening to your group (WLC). Yo totally rely in your own knowledge and understading not knowing the truth and not knowing you start deceiving people. Why? For God said;2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 2Ti 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. Job 32:8 But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding. Joh 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Of which all kind of definition comes with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Pro 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. Pro 16:25 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. Pro 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. Hos 13:2 And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.
Warning: Pro 28:10 Whoso causeth the righteous to go astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit: but the upright shall have good things in possession.

Must have to exhort people instead: Isa 58:2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God. That we have exhort people to seek God's face daily according to His grace and mercies and not according to our own knowledge and understanding!

Comforting One another in Christ Jesus: 1Th 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
1Th 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
1Th 4:18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words. AMEN.

serving Christ Jesus,

The subject of the Trinity.
written by Timothy Youngblood, April 09, 2009
Greetings from Timotheos

The thing we all need to do is look at the Trinity doctrine in the light of facts. The trinity doctrine has been accepted by most Christian churches today as the Godhead consisting of three divine beings namely God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. The question is was this doctrine taught by Jesus or the Apostles and if not, where did this teaching come from? Is there historcial facts and clear scriptures that will lay to rest the question if the trinity is pagan or Christian? Yes there are and if you truly wat to know check out this URL...

The Credibility of the bible
written by Timothy Youngblood, March 26, 2009
Greetings from Timotheos.

Our Adversary, Satan the Devil, knows that God's word is truth. We are told by Christ, "Satan comes Immediately and takes away the word that was sown." (Mark 4:15) Satan was the first being to question God's word. He was the first to change and to add to God's word. Satan could not prevent the sacrifice of the Christ so now he wants to take away from God's word so people will not understand the truth about salvation through the Messiah. We are warned to beware of those who would come as ministers of righteousness but are wolves in Shepherds clothing. 2 Cor 11:13-15. "For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works."

Satan loves to confuse the issue, and just like Satan; deceivers use words having more than one sense so as to seem to say one thing but intend another, and Satan is their teacher and the father and master of deception. The truth can never be interpreted just any way we please; but we must go to the scriptures for truth, and depend on the Spirit of truth for understanding. 2 Pet 1:20-21. "knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit."

True scripture can only be interpreted by men moved by the Holy Spirit of God, and if it's only being interpreted by men alone, it's the interpretation of men, not of God! Satan desires greatly to destroy the written word of God and has tried many times down through history and continues to do so today. If He can't get us to disbelieve the scriptures, he will try other ways to deceive. Satan knows that a frontal assault very seldom works, and he knows if he tries to burn all the bibles in the world he would get most professing Christians of this day working to defend it. So how could he accomplish this? How could he get us to reject the true words of God while still thinking we have it? The way he is doing this brethren is by changing the contents of some Bibles to mean something that was not intended by the original authors. What better way to deceive the unsuspecting sheep than to "slowly change" the very book we all trust without question. It is not necessary to change every scripture but just selected parts that lead to the worship of the TRUE creator God, and His TRUE identity, as well as God's plan of salvation, and new covenant that leads people into His kingdom through the true Messiah Jesus, and being baptized with the true baptism, and having hands laid on the convert to receive the Holy Spirit of God to help understand all things.

If you would like to read a well researched study that not only shows the history of the bible but what the World council of Churches (WCC) are doing with the new bibles check out this URL.

written by I B Khandel. Know the God correctly as is..., March 18, 2009

THERE IS ONLY ONE TRUE GOD (1 Cor. 8:6; Jam. 2:19), yet the Father is shown to be God (Jn. 3:17 cf. 5:23; etc.), the Son is shown to be God (Jn. 20:28; Rom. 9:5; Phil. 2:6; Titus 2:13; Heb. 1:8; 2 Pet. 1:1; Col. 2:9; Isa. 40:3 cf. Matt. 3:1-3) and the Holy Spirit is shown to be God (Acts 5:3,4; Ex. 17:2,7 cf. Heb. 3:9; Jer. 31:31-34 cf. Heb. 10:15-17). Furthermore, the Father is NOT the Son (Jn. 8:17,18; 14:23; 17:1; 1 Tim. 2:5; 2 Jn. 9; Rev. 5:9; etc.) or the Holy Spirit (Jn. 14:26) and the Son is NOT the Holy Spirit (Jn. 14:16). They are three separate and distinct persons. So the Trinity is Scripturally verified.

Know as it is...

The infinite space = Supreme God.

Father = Universal power / light.
Son = The Earth consciousness.
Holy spirit = Jesus.

Doesn't SDA believe in the Trinity?
written by Kathy Evans, March 10, 2009
OK, I'm a little confused. This appears to be an SDA website, correct me if I'm wrong. In the above article, you listed some traits of Protestant churches that are based in paganism, and you included belief in the Trinity as one of them. I also belong to the SDA, and they believe in the Trinity, so I'm a little confused?

John 4:7-24
7) There came a woman of Samar'ia to draw water. Jesus said to her, " Give me a drink." smilies/cool.gif For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9) The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samar'ia?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. 10) Jesus answered her, " If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, `Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." 11) The woman said to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; where do you get that living water? 12) Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?" 13) Jesus said to her, " Every one who drinks of this water will thirst again, 14) but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." 15) The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw." 16) Jesus said to her, " Go, call your husband, and come here." 17) The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, " You are right in saying, `I have no husband'; 1smilies/cool.gif for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband; this you said truly." 19) The woman said to him, "Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. 20) Our fathers worshiped on this mountain; and you say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship." 21) Jesus said to her, " Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22) You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23) But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him. 24) God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."
