Love is the Fulfillment of the Law

“Love is the fulfilling of the law.” Romans 13:10. Did Jesus replace the commandments with love?  Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” Matthew 22:36-40.

Love is a summary of the law. To love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind summarizes the first four commandments. To love our neighbor as ourselves summarizes the last six commandments.

How can we show our neighbor that we love him? The answer is by not stealing from him, lying to him, coveting what is his, etc. How can we show God that we love Him? By not having any God’s before Him, by not having any graven images of Him or anything, by not taking His name in vain, and by remembering the His Sabbath day and keeping it holy.

Loving someone causes us to honor their requests with joy. One cannot say that he loves God and yet he ignores what He has said. “He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 1 John 2:4

“For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” Jesus said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” 1 John 5:3, John 14:15.
