Awake to Eternal Realities

Awake to Eternal Realities

“Let us not sleep, as do others.”—1 Thessalonians 5:6

The Scriptures repeatedly warn Yahuwah’s people about spiritual slumber. While the world remains alert, restless, and relentless in its pursuit of earthly success, the soul is often overlooked, eternity is taken lightly, and divine realities are met with apathy. People wake early and work late for temporary gains, yet they remain strangely unaffected by issues that impact their eternal destiny. In this era of ambition and competition, few can be accused of laziness in pursuing worldly success, but many are dangerously negligent of their souls.

This advice is timeless. News of faraway disasters or economic downturns quickly causes concern, but the fire of judgment and the glory of the eternal city stir little emotion. Even those who have been quickened by the Holy Spirit and made alive to Yahuwah often mourn the cooling of their passion. Therefore, the apostolic call echoes with strong, serious urgency: “Let us not sleep, as do others.”

The Danger of Sleeping in the Presence of Christ

One of the most serious warnings in Scripture comes from the Garden of Gethsemane. While the Lord Yahushua Christ was praying and sweating like great drops of blood, His disciples were sleeping. Even though they loved Him sincerely, sorrow and fatigue overtook their watchfulness. Christ’s gentle yet sharp rebuke still speaks to the church today: “So, couldn’t you stay awake with Me one hour?” (Matthew 26:40) HCSB.

The difference between Christ and His followers is deeply humbling. Our Savior lived in constant devotion to the Father’s will. His entire ministry was characterized by self-denial, compassion, and tireless effort to save souls. He considered no sacrifice too great, not even His own life. Yet those closest to Him, during His deepest suffering, were overwhelmed by sleep.

How often does this scene mirror our own spiritual state? Christ continually intercedes at the mercy seat while we become careless in prayer and slow in service. Opportunities to witness pass by, burdens for souls are borne lightly, and eternal realities fail to captivate our hearts. If we truly understood the weight of immortal souls and the certainty of judgment, we would wrestle with Yahuwah in prayer and work with renewed zeal. Therefore, let us heed the warning of Gethsemane and, by grace, strive to watch with our Lord, resisting the weakness of the flesh through reliance on the Spirit.

The Loss That Comes Through Spiritual Slumber

Samson and Delilah

Another sobering example is seen in the story of Samson. Gifted with extraordinary strength through divine consecration, he fell asleep in the lap of Delilah. While he slept, his locks were cut, his strength left him, he lost his freedom, and later his eyes were gouged out (Judges 16:19–21). His downfall did not start with outright rebellion but with careless rest and slow spiritual neglect.

Samson’s history acts as a serious warning to believers. Spiritual strength depends on faith, obedience, and constant self-examination. When these are ignored, decline becomes inevitable. Many who once served bravely, prayed passionately, and courageously stood for truth have gradually fallen into comfort and complacency, relying on past accomplishments rather than current dependence on Yahuwah.

Spiritual sleep opens the door to the enemy. Satan never sleeps, and temptation is relentless. Small compromises often go unnoticed until spiritual strength has quietly diminished. While restoration is possible through repentance and divine mercy, the damage done can be painful and long-lasting. Therefore, believers must actively protect their faith, keeping in mind that once strength is lost, it’s not easily regained, and once spiritual testimony is damaged, it’s hard to restore.

Sleeping Guards and the Peril to the Church

Our Lord’s parable of the wheat and the tares teaches another important lesson. “While men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat” (Matthew 13:25). History repeatedly shows that when the church becomes careless and inattentive, false doctrine, moral compromise, and spiritual decline quickly follow.

prayerful man

An unwatchful church will not stay holy for long. When truth is ignored and prayer cools, the Holy Spirit is saddened, and spiritual strength diminishes. The best protection against error isn’t just doctrinal correction but a vibrant inner spiritual life filled with humility, repentance, and devotion to Christ.

Just as a healthy body fights off disease, a spiritually healthy church dispels error and corruption. Vigilance preserves purity, unity, and effectiveness. Yet, laziness invites decline, division, and dishonor. Therefore, Yahuwah’s people must stay prayerful, doctrinally faithful, and watchful in their actions, or the blessing once received may be lost and Christ’s testimony weakened before the world.

The Call to Awake Before It Is Too Late

The gravest warning is directed at those who remain unconverted. The Bible is full of warnings against procrastination and careless delay. Jonah slept while the storm of judgment was raging. Solomon’s sluggard hesitated to get up until poverty overtook him. Eutychus fell asleep during the preaching and fell to his death (Acts 20:9). Each example emphasizes the danger of spiritual indifference and delayed obedience.

Many hear the gospel many times yet delay repentance, promising themselves a more suitable time. Such delay is risky. Scripture says, “Now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2). Perishing under the sound of the gospel means dying with full knowledge that the truth was rejected and grace was refused.

The sinner who rests in false security is in immediate danger. Judgment is approaching, life remains uncertain, and mercy is available now. Christ invites everyone to look to Him and live, for “The one who believes in the Son has eternal life” (John 3:36) HCSB. To refuse this invitation is to knowingly and willingly choose ruin, despising the only remedy Yahuwah has provided.

Conclusion

Whether addressed to a believer or an unbeliever, the message is unmistakably clear: spiritual sleep is dangerous. Watchfulness honors Christ, preserves spiritual strength, protects the church, and prepares the soul for eternity. Let us honestly examine ourselves, repent of sloth and indifference, and seek renewed fervor in prayer and obedience. May Yahuwah grant grace to awaken us all, that we may live faithfully, serve earnestly, persevere steadfastly, and be found ready and rejoicing at His appearing. “Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober” (1 Thessalonians 5:6).

As in Daniel 2:1 & 19 Yah reveals His plans in the night season as men were sleeping – Nebuchadnezzar and Daniel respectively. After the hustle and bustle of everyday life, while they were resting, it were time that Yah could bind Satan and impress their minds, even the heathen king. Satan is not that strong that Yahuwah could not bind him so that Yah could work on the minds of the just and the unjust, to accomplish His purpose. To Nebuchadnezzar the the future has been revealed since he set his mind on it, as for Daniel Yah used him as an agent, humble in heart, Daniel 2:30. All this was done in the night. Even though the Babylonian monarch seek up the wisdom of the soothsayers, Yahuwah were not at rest, but blocked their minds. That trust that Daniel and his companions had in Yahuwah who reveals secrets unto His servants the prophets, were what made them to understand the vision and could remind the king what he dreamt about. So, am I going to sleep, resting my mind in Yahuwah that He may have an open door to enter or have I invited Him to live in heart and mine, is the question I need to ask myself. Though I meditate on Him daily and the last thing in the night, may Yah forbid that Satan get a foothold in the citadel of a mind that belongs to Messiah. Daniel, Nehemiah etc., are good examples.
Nikodemus visiting Christ in the night were told about salvation, not for him but for me as well, since it is at these times that I could reflect where I have been un-Christ-like and plea to get in harmony with heaven.
Peter was caught of guard in the denial of Yahushua, which were my experience sometimes, the three closest disciples were sleeping during the transfiguration, getting drowsy on Sabbaths of feast days are all ways that the enemy are stealing our minds to snatch seeds of truth away. That moment of slumber could just lead later on that I may or had not heard or were to slow of heart to help someone in need of salvation. Or being bend to much for the things of this world, that made it nearly impossible to hear the voice of Yah to share, and later impossible if I may harden my heart. But it is in the night time, when the house is silent, when you hear the breathing of companion, sons, that one enters heavenly places and commune with the Father and the Son.
Then it is no more a prayer of blessings or only forgiving of sins of self but as Job has prayed for his sons and daughters in case they may have done something wrong, for those near and far and so the sphere of prayer rise up for those one doesn`t know, but the next day, you meet someone never met before and could share what you can, what you know, and when such a poor person even bless you and thank you, it is really words that fills my heart with joy – seeing it comes from a hart filled with heaven sent “thank you”. Even talking as old friends as if we knew each other for a long time, but never met before, maybe I would see this person again, don`t now. Only Yah knows. Or is he like Pilgrim journeying to the celestial city! And so I go about daily to share, to feed, to help where Yah leads. And finding ways to excel in His service.
In His love.

Great reminders in the article, I once listened to a sermon in the ’80s on Eutychus.
But here is another reminder: In Paragraph 7, instead of saying Satan never sleeps, would it be more fitting to say Satan does not give up, or does not rest (hopefully that isn’t the case) from his cunning devices.

For we have been told in Psalms 121:4 He who doesn’t sleep and for what reason He does not sleep; therefore that can not be said the same nature i.e. not sleeping, but for doing contrary, with the understanding that the One who doesn’t sleep is Uncreated and those that are said to sleep are normally the created, e.g. Yahuwah caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep….,Yahushua slept in the boat amid a raging storm, Ya’ acov slept under the stars while running away from Esav, kings of the Old Testament slept with their forefathers and were buried, Shtefen prayed, “Lord Yahushua, receive my spirit.” Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep….etc :-)

While angels are depicted as worshipping day and night in heaven, and thus not sleeping, because they derive their energy and are constantly sustained directly by the Creator, Shlomo stated in Ecclesiastes 8:16 16 ” —people getting no sleep day or night…”. That would be understandable in the light of Revelation 14:11 where there is a class that “…have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name….”, that the sleep being suggested is actually rest; and that, could befit Satan in his relentlessness to cause havoc, however, no longer deriving his energy from the divine, and thus liable to succumb to sleep sooner or later. :-))

Yahuwah bless you all as you exalt Him by searching His unfathomable attributes.

Dear Charlie,

You are correct that there is no explicit text in Scriptures indicating that Satan does not sleep, unlike the explicit confirmation about Yahuwah in Psalms 121:4. However, there are verses in the Bible from which we can infer that Satan, too, does not sleep and is on the alert all 24/7/365 to scheme against His people:
• 1 Peter 5:8: It warns believers to “be sober, be vigilant” because the devil “prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour”. The call to be “vigilant” implies that the enemy is active even when humans might be resting.
• Revelation 12:10: Describes Satan as the “accuser of our brothers,” stating that he accuses them before Yahuwah “day and night”. This “day and night” phrasing suggests a perpetual, 24-hour cycle of activity.
• Job 1:7 and 2:2: When Yahuwah asks Satan where he has been, Satan replies that he has been “going to and fro on the earth” and “walking up and down on it”. This suggests a restless, constant movement across the world.
• Matthew 13:25: In the Parable of the Weeds, Yahushua notes that “while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat”. This illustrates that Satan is active and working specifically during the time when humans are asleep.
Thanks for the engagement.
In Father Yahuwah’s Love,
galal.

Amen. This article goes well with the parable of Matthew 25:1-13 and our duty, danger and glory that awaits us. Thanks be to Yah for this timely message, and that we may answer to this call by the procession.
This procession who made the call, is it the Holy Spirit working in people other than the two sleeping maidens groups. People totally separate from the mainstream churches?
