When the Sabbath Question Split the Family: How the 2009 Lunar-Sabbath Discovery Fractured WLC Leadership

The history of World’s Last Chance (WLC) cannot be told honestly without acknowledging one of the most painful chapters in its development: the division that followed the ministry’s acceptance of the Biblical luni-solar calendar and the Lunar Sabbath in 2009.

What began as a sincere search for greater Biblical truth became a profound test of family relationships, loyalty, conscience, and spiritual leadership. The issue was not merely whether the Sabbath should be called “Saturday” or calculated differently. It challenged a foundational assumption about how the Sabbath itself was identified. Once that question was opened, the consequences reached far beyond the calendar.

WLC today teaches that the Biblical calendar is luni-solar, that each month begins with New Moon Day, and that the weekly Sabbaths occur on the 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th days of each lunar month. But WLC did not begin with this understanding.

The Discovery That Changed Everything

In the middle of 2009, WLC received a copy of The Great Calendar Controversy, authored by Elaine Vornholt and Laura Lee Vornholt-Jones. The book presented a radically different understanding of the Biblical calendar and challenged the assumption that the modern seven-day continuous weekly cycle had existed unchanged since Creation.

For WLC leadership, this was not an attractive new theory to adopt casually. It was a challenge that demanded investigation.

The question was simple but enormous:

How did Yahuwah intend His people to identify the seventh day?

The ministry’s understanding was that the Creator’s calendar is established by the sun and moon, with New Moon Day marking the beginning of each month, and the weekly cycle restarting thereafter. This meant that the Sabbath could no longer simply be identified by asking which modern weekday was called “Saturday.”

If the sun, moon, and stars were appointed for signs, seasons, days, and years at Creation (Genesis 1:14-18), could the weekly Sabbath really be separated from the celestial calendar established by the Creator?

As the evidence was examined, the implications became increasingly difficult to ignore.

WLC came to understand that the Biblical calendar was not the modern Gregorian calendar.

The issue had become much deeper:

Were we following the Creator’s calendar—or a later human calendar?

A Doctrinal Discovery Became a Family Crisis

Here is where the story becomes painful.

When a ministry changes its understanding of a fundamental doctrine, the consequences are never merely intellectual. People have invested years of their lives in what they previously believed. They have built relationships around it. They have preached it, defended it, sacrificed for it, and sometimes suffered for it.

The acceptance of the Lunar Sabbath therefore created tremendous strain within the WLC leadership family.

Not everyone arrived at the same conclusion.

Some accepted the new evidence and believed that continuing to observe Saturday according to the continuous modern week would mean knowingly remaining with a tradition that could not be demonstrated from Scripture.

Others struggled to accept that conclusion.

The disagreement was particularly painful because these were not strangers debating across the internet. These were brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, fellow workers, and members of a spiritual family who had labored together for years.

The calendar question entered the heart of the family.

And the family fractured.

Why the Disagreement Was So Serious

From the outside, someone might ask:

“Why allow a disagreement about the calendar to divide a ministry?”

But from the WLC perspective, this question misunderstands the issue.

If the Sabbath is one of the commandments of Yahuwah, then identifying the correct Sabbath is not a minor matter.

The fourth commandment says:

If the Sabbath is one of the commandments of Yahuwah, then identifying the correct Sabbath is not a minor matter.

“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.”
— Exodus 20:8

The command assumes that Yahuwah has already established which day is His Sabbath.

Therefore, the question is not whether believers should obey the Sabbath.

The question is:

Which day did Yahuwah sanctify?

WLC became convinced that this question could not be answered correctly while simply assuming that the modern calendar and its uninterrupted weekly cycle were identical to the calendar established at Creation.

Once that conviction took hold, compromise became difficult.

For those who accepted the discovery, returning to the old Saturday Sabbath could seem like turning away from revealed truth.

For those who rejected the discovery, accepting the Lunar Sabbath could appear to be abandoning a foundational doctrine.

Both sides believed something fundamental was at stake.

That is precisely why the wound became so deep.

The $1,000,000 Challenge

The Lunar Sabbath controversy did not remain an internal disagreement.

As WLC’s conviction concerning the Biblical calendar became firmly established, the ministry eventually took an extraordinary public step: it issued a $1,000,000 challenge concerning the Biblical calendar and the Lunar Sabbath.

The significance of the challenge was not that money could prove a theological position. Money cannot establish truth.

The challenge was intended to put WLC’s claims to the test.

WLC was effectively saying:

If our understanding of the Biblical calendar is false, demonstrate it.

If the continuous modern weekly cycle can be established from Scripture and history as the uninterrupted continuation of the cycle established by Yahuwah at Creation, then the evidence should be presented.

If the Lunar Sabbath can be shown to contradict Scripture, then that contradiction should be identified.

This transformed the issue from an accusation that WLC had merely adopted an unusual doctrine into a challenge to examine the evidence.

The million-dollar figure underscored how seriously WLC regarded the matter.

The ministry was not asking people to accept the Lunar Sabbath simply because WLC leadership taught it. The underlying appeal was to examine the evidence for oneself.

The Challenge Was About Evidence, Not Personal Authority

This distinction is crucial when considering the leadership fracture of 2009.

The question should never have been:

“Do you trust WLC leadership?”

The more important question was:

“What do Scripture and the historical evidence show?”

Human beings can make mistakes. Leaders can make mistakes. Ministries can make mistakes. Families can make mistakes.

Therefore, no believer should accept a doctrine merely because a respected person teaches it.

WLC’s position was that the Biblical calendar must stand or fall on its own evidence.

That principle also explains why the discovery was so disruptive.

A family can survive many differences of opinion when those differences concern matters that do not affect fundamental worship.

But when the disagreement concerns whether Yahuwah’s people are commanded to keep His Sabbath, the disagreement becomes unavoidable.

The Cost of Following Conviction

There is a recurring pattern throughout Scripture.

Truth does not always unite people immediately.

Sometimes truth divides.

Yahushua Himself warned:

“Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.”
— Matthew 10:34

He was not teaching His followers to seek conflict. He was warning that allegiance to truth can expose divisions that already exist beneath the surface.

The same principle applies to the history of WLC.

The 2009 calendar discovery exposed a fundamental disagreement about authority.

Would Scripture remain the final authority even when its implications were uncomfortable?

Or would previously accepted conclusions be protected because changing them would be too costly?

For the WLC leadership family, these were not abstract questions.

They became personal.

The Pain of Losing Fellowship

One of the greatest tragedies of doctrinal division is that people often remember the doctrine but forget the relationships that were lost along the way.

The 2009 calendar discovery exposed a fundamental disagreement about authority. Would Scripture remain the final authority even when its implications were uncomfortable? Or would previously accepted conclusions be protected because changing them would be too costly?

People who once prayed together could no longer worship together.

People who had worked side by side could no longer see the path forward in the same way.

People who had trusted one another were suddenly forced to examine one another’s convictions.

And because the disagreement concerned something as central as worship, there was no easy way to shelve the issue and simply agree to disagree.

The calendar followed people into their weekly lives.

The fracture was therefore not merely organizational.

It was relational, spiritual, and deeply emotional.

Yet the Crisis Also Clarified WLC’s Mission

Painful though the division was, WLC came to regard the experience as part of the ministry’s larger journey toward restored Biblical truth.

The ministry did not simply exchange one calendar for another.

The calendar question became connected with a broader restoration message: believers must return to Scripture itself rather than automatically accepting religious traditions inherited from later centuries.

WLC came to believe that the Creator’s calendar was established at Creation and that the sun and moon serve as divinely appointed timekeepers.

This conviction subsequently became one of the ministry’s defining teachings.

WLC developed extensive material defending the Lunar Sabbath and answering objections to it. The $1,000,000 challenge became another expression of that confidence: the ministry was willing to place its claims before critics and invite them to demonstrate where its Biblical and historical case was wrong.

We Must Tell the Story Honestly

It would be tempting to tell the story as though the 2009 discovery was simply a triumphant doctrinal correction.

But that would leave out an essential part of the truth.

There was a human cost.

People were hurt.

Relationships were damaged.

Some departed.

Some remained.

Some changed their understanding.

Others could not.

And the wounds from such a division do not disappear simply because many years have passed.

That history should not be hidden.

Neither should it be exploited to condemn those who made different decisions.

The purpose of remembering it is not to reopen old wounds but to understand the price that sometimes accompanies a sincere pursuit of truth.

The Million-Dollar Challenge and the Principle of Examination

The $1,000,000 challenge also carries a broader lesson for every believer.

Truth should not fear examination.

If a teaching is false, expose it.

If an argument is unsound, identify the error.

If the evidence contradicts a doctrine, abandon the doctrine.

But if a doctrine is supported by Scripture and historical evidence, then it should not be rejected simply because it is unfamiliar or because accepting it would be uncomfortable.

This is particularly important in the calendar controversy.

For centuries, most Christians have assumed that Saturday is automatically the Biblical seventh-day Sabbath. But an assumption is not the same thing as a demonstration.

The question must be investigated.

What calendar did Yahuwah establish?

How were the months determined?

What was New Moon Day?

Did the weekly cycle continue uninterrupted through the lunar month?

Were the Biblical Sabbaths connected to specific lunar dates?

Did later calendar changes affect the method by which the Sabbath was identified?

These are historical and Biblical questions.

And they deserve evidence-based answers.

A Painful Chapter, but Not a Forgotten One

More than a decade later, the events of 2009 remain an important part of WLC’s history.

The Lunar Sabbath did not merely change the calendar printed on a wall.

It changed the ministry.

It tested friendships.

It tested leadership.

It tested family relationships.

It tested loyalty.

It tested conscience.

And it exposed how difficult it can be for sincere believers to accept a truth that overturns something they have believed for many years.

The $1,000,000 challenge represents the public continuation of that same commitment to examination.

WLC’s position is not that anyone should believe the Lunar Sabbath merely because the ministry says so.

Rather, the ministry’s challenge is essentially this:

Examine the evidence. Search the Scriptures. Test the history. Then follow the truth wherever it leads.

What the 2009 Division Taught WLC

Perhaps the most important lesson of 2009 is not merely about the calendar.

Scripture must remain above every human relationship and every institutional structure.

It is about where our ultimate loyalty must rest.

Human beings can make mistakes.

Ministries can make mistakes.

Leaders can make mistakes.

Families can make mistakes.

But Scripture must remain above every human relationship and every institutional structure.

If WLC’s understanding of the Sabbath was wrong in 2009, then it should have been corrected.

If the new understanding was right, then accepting it was necessary regardless of the relational cost.

That principle remains unchanged.

Obedience cannot ultimately be measured by how comfortable it makes us, how many people agree with us, or how much fellowship we may lose.

It must be measured by faithfulness to the Word of Yahuwah.

A Scar and a Testimony

The division of 2009 therefore remains both a scar and a testimony.

It is a scar because a spiritual family was fractured.

It is a testimony because the search for truth was allowed to challenge even deeply established assumptions within the ministry itself.

And the $1,000,000 challenge represents WLC’s continuing conviction that truth should be capable of withstanding examination.

The challenge is not ultimately about the money.

It is about the question behind the money:

Can the Biblical Lunar Sabbath be disproved?

If it can, then let the evidence be brought forward.

If it cannot, then perhaps the subject deserves far more serious consideration than many have been willing to give it.

The events of 2009 therefore remain both painful and defining.

The Lunar Sabbath split the WLC leadership family.

But the controversy also forced WLC to confront a question far larger than its own internal relationships:

Will we follow what we have always believed—or will we follow the evidence wherever Scripture leads?

That is the painful legacy of 2009.

And it is a chapter of WLC history that should never be forgotten.

The Sabbath Question

[Verse 1]
In two-thousand-nine, the searching began,
We opened the Word, not the traditions of man.
A calendar question shook what we knew,
And Yahuwah’s great light came shining through.
The Sabbath we thought we had always embraced,
Was challenged by Scripture, by truth to be faced.
We searched through the Word though the pathway was hard,
And learned that His calendar must be our guide.

[Verse 2]
But truth brought a sorrow we never foresaw,
It entered our family and opened a door.
Some followed the light, some could not agree,
And brothers were separated painfully.
The ministry fractured, relationships strained,
The cost of conviction was deeply ingrained.
Yet through all the anguish, one truth still remained:
Yahuwah is worthy; His Word must be obeyed.

[Chorus]
Father Yahuwah, Your truth will remain,
Though families may fracture and hearts feel the pain.
We follow Your Word, though the pathway is steep,
Your Sabbath we honor, Your covenant keep.
No tradition of man, no authority here,
Can silence the truth when Your Word makes it clear.
WLC will stand, not for glory or fame,
But faithful to Scripture and Your holy name.

[Verse 3]
The sun, moon, and stars You appointed above,
Declare Your appointed times, established in love.
New Moon begins what Your calendar shows,
And Sabbath returns as the lunar cycle flows.
The question was simple, yet costly to bear:
Will we follow Your calendar, Father, with care?
Not what we inherited, not what crowds say,
But what does Your Word teach us today?

[Verse 4]
Then came the challenge, a million was placed,
To test every claim and the evidence faced.
Not money itself could establish what’s true,
But truth should withstand every challenge brought through.
If Lunar Sabbath’s false, let the evidence speak;
If Scripture disproves it, then show what we seek.
But if it stands firm when examined and tried,
Then truth must be followed, whatever the price.

[Bridge]
We remember the tears, we remember the cost,
We remember the loved ones and all that was lost.
But we will not hide what the journey revealed,
Nor bury the wounds that the years have concealed.
Let every doctrine be tested and tried,
Let Scripture alone be the measure and guide.
For leaders may falter, and ministries fail,
But Your Word, Father Yahuwah, forever prevails.

[Final Chorus]
Father Yahuwah, Your truth will remain,
Through sorrow and testing, through loss and through pain.
We follow Your Word, though the pathway is steep,
Your Sabbath we honor, Your covenant keep.
Let every sincere heart seek truth without fear,
Let every closed question be opened and clear.
WLC will remember the cost of the way,
And praise Father Yahuwah for truth every day.

[Outro]
The family was broken, the journey was hard,
But Scripture remained our unchanging safeguard.
Not money, nor numbers, nor praise from the crowd—
But truth before Yahuwah, spoken clear and loud.
We will test, we will search, we will faithfully see:
Father Yahuwah, let Your truth set us free.

Dear WLC:

I figured perhaps WLC once used say from 2009 using the first dawn after the first visible crescent method to the first dawn after the sun and moon conjunction method? By March 2014 I recall WLC was using the first dawn after the sun and moon conjunction method. The change in the Metonic Cycle Year method was changed from beginning the year from the first dawn after the sun and moon conjunction AFTER the northward equinox, the spring equinox method to the first dawn after the sun and moon conjunction nearest the northward equinox, the spring equinox for Jerusalem method in the Gregorian year 2014 the Biblical Year 6001. I find technically the correct method is the first dawn after the sun and moon conjunction nearest the northward equinox the vast majority of the time with minor anomalies allowed occasionally only when necessary as I come to understand studying the matter as I recall in my studies.

What years did WLC use the method of the first dawn after the first visible crescent moon method was used and starting the correct method of the first dawn after the sun and moon conjunction method? I’m curious.

Sincerely in Yahuwah’s service and love, 🥰 ❤️

Dearest Tony,

Thank you for taking the time to share your careful observations and research. 🥰❤️ You raise some very interesting questions regarding the development of WLC’s understanding of the luni-solar calendar and, in particular, the transition from the first visible crescent method to the conjunction-based method.

You are correct that WLC’s understanding of these matters has developed over time as we continued studying Scripture and the evidence. However, I would not want to give you specific years for each methodological change from memory alone and risk giving you inaccurate information.

What I can say is that WLC has never considered its understanding of the calendar to be beyond correction. As with our other beliefs, we are willing to acknowledge where our understanding has changed as we have received what we believe to be clearer light.

Your observation about the relationship between the lunar conjunction, the northward equinox, and the beginning of the Biblical year is particularly interesting. We appreciate brethren who carefully examine these matters and bring their findings forward in a sincere spirit of seeking truth.

Thank you again, Tony, for your faithfulness, your research, and your desire to understand these things more accurately. May Father Yahuwah continue to guide all of us into greater light and truth through Yahushua. 🙏❤️

Dear WLC:

I have an understanding with loss concerning deciding to accepting and following the lunar Sabbath truth by using Yahuwah’s Luni-Solar Calendar of creation. I found it necessary to depart from the SDA Church and end my membership there. This has brought division and separation from people I have known for 20 years. 😥

The seeking to obey the 4th commandment of the 7th Day Sabbath and seeing that one must use the Biblical calendar, the Luni-Solar Calendar of creation established by Yahuwah at Creation. This is indeed spiritual bread that Yahuwah has provided to train us to be in Yahuwah’s Kingdom.

Dear Father Yahuwah who is in heaven. Hallowed be Your name, Your Kingdom come, Your will be done as it is in heaven. Continue to give us our daily spiritual bread. And forgive our trasspasses and sins, and give us the humility and love to forgive trespasses and sins of others through Christ Yahushua. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the Kingdom and the power, and the glory forever and ever. In Yahushua’s name I pray, amen. 🥰❤️

Dear Father Yahuwah God Almighty: Please provide and protect the WLC Team former members of the WLC Team, the WLC community myself included, and translators like Bazil from South Africa as we cooperate with WLC in sharing Your truth to the world. In Yahushua’s name I pray, amen. 🥰❤️

Sincerely in Yahuwah’s service and love, 🥰 ❤️
