Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) are very missionary-minded. Their zeal to share truth is commendable and inspiring. Mormons believe their doctrines are free of error, while all other denominations are wrong. This is natural. An honest-minded person will not knowingly be part of an organization that teaches error.
The problem arises when one assumes that the command to leave Babylon must not apply to you individually because your beliefs are free of error! Heaven is inviting all Mormons to carefully study their beliefs in the light of Yah’s Word and lay aside all that does not agree with Scripture. Following is a list of some of the Mormon doctrines that conflict with the Holy Bible.
- Mormon doctrine emphasizes eternal progress. They teach as man is, God once was; as God is, man may become. Yahuwah did create man with the ability to ever advance in knowledge, joy and love. Scripture hints at the joy that awaits the redeemed. However, this continual advancement does not apply to Yahuwah Himself. Mormons believe that Yahuwah was not always the Supreme Being of the universe, but only achieved this through righteous living and persistent effort. The Eternal One clearly states: “I am Yahuwah, I change not.” (Malachi 3:6) It is blasphemous to say that what man now is, the Creator was at one time.
Such a belief makes God-in-the-past to be equal to man-of-the-present. To lower the Eternal One to the level of the creature is no different than to make an image of Him for worship. This process is described in Scripture: “Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible El into an image made like corruptible man.” (Romans 1:22-23) Yahuwah asks: “To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? Saith the Holy One.” (Isaiah 40:25)
No finite human being can ever become as the infinite Creator now is: “Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Yahuwah; neither are there any works like unto thy works.” (Psalm 86:8)
- Mormons teach that Yahuwah has not always existed but Himself, “was born of woman" (Joseph F. Smith, Church News, September 19, 1936.) Scripture, however, says that Yahuwah is “eternal,” i.e., had no beginning: “The eternal Eloah is thy refuge.” (Deuteronomy 33:27) (See also Psalm 90:2 and 1 Timothy 1:17.)
- Mormons teach that Adam and Eve’s sin was a necessary prerequisite before they had children (and could advance to become gods). Such a belief contradicts Scripture:
1) Genesis 1:28 contains the Creator’s pre-sin command to Adam and Eve to “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.” To assume that Adam and Eve could not have had children had they not sinned makes a liar of the Creator who, in His command, clearly gifted them with the ability to “be fruitful, and multiply.” But Yahuwah cannot lie: “Eloah is not a man, that he should lie.” (Numbers 23:19)
2) To make Adam and Eve’s sin part of Yahuwah’s will removes it from being sin. Scripture defines sin as “the transgression of the law.” (See 1 John 3:4.) If it were Yahuwah’s will, it could not be sin.
The problem with this belief is that Scripture clearly refers to it as sin: “By one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” (Romans 5:12)
While Mormons’ testimony may come from their heart, the Bible warns that reliance on feelings is not safe: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9) It does not matter what you feel. If your feelings contradict Scripture, your feelings are wrong.
Furthermore, those doctrines in the Book of Mormon that contradict Scripture must also be laid aside. The Bible itself instructs: “If an angel from heaven proclaims any other gospel than the one you received let him be cursed by Yahuwah.” (Galatians 1:8, 9) Yahuwah invites His beloved Mormon children to compare all of their beliefs with Scripture alone and lay aside all that contradicts His revealed word.
