Weekly Survey
“I am” was a common Jewish expression of identity or role. In John, Jesus uses it metaphorically (“bread of life,” “light of the world,” “good shepherd”), not literally. In John 8:58, he is not claiming a divine name but emphasizing his role in Yahuwah’s plan, established before Abraham. Scripture often speaks this way: Jeremiah was known before birth (Jeremiah 1:5), and the Messiah was foreknown before the world (1 Peter 1:20). This reflects divine purpose, not personal pre-existence. Where do you stand?
