Lucifer rebelled against Yahuwah, he was followed by a host of the angels of heaven. The record declares that both he and his angels were cast out of heaven. They are now confined to this earth. For “Yahuwah spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment” 2 Peter 2:4. These fallen angels are still in league with Satan, and their chief work consists in an effort to deceive the human family and turn men away from Yahuwah.
Known as “spirits of devils,” these evil angels have, throughout the ages, carried on their deceptive and nefarious work. According to the writings of the ancient prophets, however, this work will be greatly intensified as the world draws near to its latter days. The Apostle Paul warns: “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils” 1Timothy 4:1.
The devil and his angels can work miracles. They can appear to men in a materialized form. They can influence human beings, and can practice deception upon them. So powerful, in fact, will the deceptions of Satan become in the last days that Yahuwah’s people are earnestly warned lest they too, be overcome by them.
Bible prophecies have been and are now being fulfilled before our eyes. During the past century a new form of religion has swept over the various countries of the world like a prairie fire. It is known as spiritualism. At first it was placed under the ban of all the Christian churches. Its séances were secret and mysterious, and Christians feared and shunned them. But today the exponents of spiritualism are found everywhere, even in the Christian churches; and the cult numbers its adherents by the millions! In view of this, it surely is most fitting that we inquire, What is spiritualism? Is it true or false? Is it of Yahuwah or Satan?

1. What is Spiritualism defined to be?

A belief in the frequent communication of intelligence from the world of spirits, by means of physical phenomena, commonly manifested through a person of special susceptibility, called a medium. Webster Dictionary.

2. Did this doctrine exist in ancient times?

Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am Yahuwah your Eloah. Leviticus 19:31.

NOTE: “The familiar spirits were not the spirits of the dead, but evil angels, the messengers of Satan. Ancient idolatry, which, as we have seen, comprises both worship of the dead and pretended communion with them, is declared by the Bible to have been demon worship.” Patriarchs and Prophets, page 685.

3. How does Yahuwah regard sorcerers?

And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers. Malachi 3:5.

4. What does He call the sorcerers?

Therefore hearken not ye to... your enchanters, nor to your sorcerers. . for they prophesy a lie unto you to remove you far from your land. Jeremiah 27:9, 10.

Answer: Liars.

5. What was the ancient law concerning witches, and those who had familiar spirits?

A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death. Leviticus. 20:27.

There shall not be found among you any …that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer [hypnotist], or a consulter with familiar spirits [spirit medium], or a wizard, or a necromancer [one who claims to talk to the dead]. For all that do these things are an abomination unto Yahuwah. Deuteronomy 18:10-12. (See also Exodus 22:18).

Answer: Yahuwah told His people not to have anything to do with any of these people who claim to have supernatural powers and work magic. Yahuwah doesn’t change, He no more approves of this sort of thing today, than He did then. Why, because He wants to keep something good from us? No, it is because He knows it is all a pack of lies that Satan will use to enslave and destroy us, He wants us to have the good, all the good and not the cruel evil.

Rejects Christian Fundamentals

6. With what is witchcraft classed by Paul?

Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies... I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of Yahuwah. Galatians 5:20, 21.

7. What should one do if asked to inquire of a familiar spirit?

And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their Eloah? Isaiah 8:19.

Answer: Yahuwah is saying here that when people tell you to seek wizards and witches, claiming to talk to the dead, that you are to refuse and instead seek Yahuwah. Why should the living seek help from the dead anyway when the Bible tells us, The dead know not anything?

Test Every Spirit

8. Is it possible to test every spirit?

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of Yahuwah. 1 John 4:1.

9. By what are we to try them?

To the law and to the testimony; if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Isaiah 8:20.

Answer: By the Ten Commandments and the rest of the scriptures.

The Spirit was not given--nor can it ever be bestowed--to supersede the Bible; for the Scriptures explicitly state that the word of [Yahuwah] is the standard by which all teaching and experience must be tested. Says the apostle John, 'Believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of [Yahuwah]: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.' 1 John 4:1. And Isaiah declares, 'To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.' Isaiah 8:20. The Great Controversy, page vii.3

10. Should we have any confidence in signs or wonders presented by those who would try to lead us away from Yahuwah?

And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other elohim, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams; for Yahuwah your Eloah proveth you, to know whether ye love Yahuwah your Eloah with all your heart and with all your soul. Deuteronomy 13:2, 3.

11. What course should one pursue under these circumstances?

Ye shall walk after Yahuwah your Eloah, and fear Him, and keep His commandments, and obey His voice, and ye shall serve Him, and cleave unto Him. Deuteronomy 13:4.

12. We are directed to the law and to the testimony, by which to try these spirits that assert to be voices from the dead. After one dies, how much does he know of what is going on among men?

Thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away. His sons come to honor, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them. Job 14:20, 21.

The Dead Know Not Anything

13. Does the dead know anything, or have any memory?

For the living know that they shall die; but the dead know not anything, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Ecclesiastes 9:5.

14. What does the wise man add, that forever rule out the idea that the dead come back to earth to communicate with the living?

Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion forever in anything that is done under the sun. Ecclesiastes 9:6.

15. Then when miracles are performed by spirits assuming to be those of our dead friends, to what may we attribute them?

For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of Yahuwah Almighty. Revelation 16:14.

NOTE: “But none need be deceived by the lying claims of spiritualism. [Yahuwah] has given the world sufficient light to enable them to discover the snare. As already shown, the theory which forms the very foundation of spiritualism is at war with the plainest statements of Scripture. The Bible declares that the dead know not anything, that their thoughts have perished; they have no part in anything that is done under the sun; they know nothing of the joys or sorrows of those who were dearest to them on earth.

"Furthermore, [Yahuwah] has expressly forbidden all pretended communication with departed spirits. In the days of the Hebrews there was a class of people who claimed, as do the spiritualists of today, to hold communication with the dead. But the familiar spirits, as these visitants from other worlds were called, are declared by the Bible to be the spirits of devils. (Compare Numbers 25:1-3; Psalm 106:28; I Corinthians 10:20; Revelation 16:14.) The work of dealing with familiar spirits was pronounced an abomination to [Yahuwah], and was solemnly forbidden under penalty of death. Leviticus 19:31; 20:27. The very name of witchcraft is now held in contempt. The claim that men can hold intercourse with evil spirits is regarded as a fable of the Dark Ages. But spiritualism, which numbers its converts by hundreds of thousands, yea, by millions, which has made its way into scientific circles, which has invaded churches, and has found favor in legislative bodies, and even in the courts of kings-- this mammoth deception is but a revival, in a new disguise, of the witchcraft condemned and prohibited of old.” The Great Controversy, pages 556-557.

16. What will be characteristic of last day apostasies from the faith?

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils. 1 Timothy 4:1.

NOTE: “Modern spiritualism, resting upon the same foundation, is but a revival in a new form of the witchcraft and demon worship that [Yahuwah] condemned and prohibited of old. It is foretold in the Scriptures, which declare that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils. 1 Timothy 4:1. Paul, in his second letter to the Thessalonians, points to the special working of Satan in spiritualism as an event to take place immediately before the second advent of [Yahushua]. Speaking of [Yahushua's] second coming, he declares that it is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders. 2 Thessalonians 2:9. And Peter, describing the dangers to which the ekklesia was to be exposed in the last days, says that as there were false prophets who led Israel into sin, so there will be false teachers, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the [Master] that bought them. . . . And many shall follow their pernicious ways. 2 Peter 2:1, 2. Here the apostle has pointed out one of the marked characteristics of spiritualist teachers.” Patriarchs and Prophets, page 686.

The reason why we use Ekklesia and not church when referring to Yahuwah's faithful in WLC content is because the word "church" does not accurately convey the meaning of the original Greek, "Ekklesia." Throughout the New Testament, Ekklesia refers to the Called Out Ones. The word "church," which emphasizes a group, is therefore an erroneous translation and should never have been used. Christians are literally the Called Out Ones. The true followers of Yahushua are indeed the Called Out Ones from the organized denominations and religions of fallen Babylon. When the call to flee Babylon has been heard, none are to again return to Babylonian churches and forms of religion.

In League With Satan

17. How will Satan deceive the people?

And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 2 Corinthians 11:14.

NOTE: In the future, Satan’s superstitions will assume new forms. Errors will be presented in a pleasing and flattering manner. False theories, clothed with garments of light, will be presented to Yahuwah’s people. Thus Satan will try to deceive, if possible, the very elect.

18. What role will his agents assume before the end?

Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness. 2 Corinthians 11:15.

NOTE: “As spiritualism more closely imitates the nominal Christianity of the day, it has greater power to deceive and ensnare. Satan himself is converted, after the modern order of things. He will appear in the character of an angel of light. Through the agency of spiritualism, miracles will be wrought, the sick will be healed, and many undeniable wonders will be performed. And as the spirits will profess faith in the Bible, and manifest respect for the institutions of the [ekklesia], their work will be accepted as a manifestation of divine power.” The Great Controversy, page 588.

19. Are miracles always evidence of the power of Yahuwah?

And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast” Revelation 13:13–14.

Answer: No.

NOTE: Yahushua said, ‘Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in My name, saying, I am the Anointed; and shall deceive many.’ Many false messiahs will appear, claiming to work miracles, and declaring that the time of the deliverance of the Jewish nation has come. These will mislead many. [Yahushua’s] words were fulfilled. Between His death and the siege of Jerusalem many false messiahs appeared. But this warning was given also to those who live in this age of the world. The same deceptions practiced prior to the destruction of Jerusalem have been practiced through the ages, and will be practiced again. Desire of Ages, 628.

20. Will Satan try to counterfeit the coming of Yahushua, by signs and wonders?

Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is the Anointed, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Matthew 24:23, 24.

Answer: Yes.

NOTE: “Fearful sights of a supernatural character will soon be revealed in the heavens, in token of the power of miracle-working demons. The spirits of devils will go forth to the kings of the earth and to the whole world, to fasten them in deception, and urge them on to unite with Satan in his last struggle against the government of heaven. By these agencies, rulers and subjects will be alike deceived. Persons will arise pretending to be [Yahushua] Himself, and claiming the title and worship which belong to the world's Redeemer. They will perform wonderful miracles of healing and will profess to have revelations from heaven contradicting the testimony of the Scriptures.” Great Controversy page 624.

21. After these signs and wonders are shown, what is immediately to take place?

The Master shall consume with the spirit of His mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of His coming; even him whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish. 2 Thessalonians. 2:8-10.

Answer: The second coming of Yahushua.

NOTE: “As the crowning act in the great drama of deception, Satan himself will personate [Yahushua]. The [ekklesia] has long professed to look to the Saviour's advent as the consummation of her hopes. Now the great deceiver will make it appear that [Yahushua] has come. In different parts of the earth, Satan will manifest himself among men as a majestic being of dazzling brightness, resembling the description of the Son of [Yahuwah] given by John in the Revelation. Revelation 1:13-15. The glory that surrounds him is unsurpassed by anything that mortal eyes have yet beheld. The shout of triumph rings out upon the air: 'Christ has come! Christ has come!' The people prostrate themselves in adoration before him, while he lifts up his hands and pronounces a blessing upon them, as [Yahushua] blessed His disciples when He was upon the earth. His voice is soft and subdued, yet full of melody. In gentle, compassionate tones he presents some of the same gracious, heavenly truths which the Saviour uttered; he heals the diseases of the people, and then, in his assumed character of [Yahushua], he claims to have changed the Sabbath to Sunday, and commands all to hallow the day which he has blessed. He declares that those who persist in keeping holy the seventh day are blaspheming his name by refusing to listen to his angels sent to them with light and truth. This is the strong, almost overmastering delusion. Like the Samaritans who were deceived by Simon Magus, the multitudes, from the least to the greatest, give heed to these sorceries, saying: This is 'the great power of [Yahuwah].' Acts 8:10.

But the people of [Yahuwah] will not be misled. The teachings of this false christ are not in accordance with the Scriptures. His blessing is pronounced upon the worshipers of the beast and his image, the very class upon whom the Bible declares that [Yahuwah's] unmingled wrath shall be poured out.

"And, furthermore, Satan is not permitted to counterfeit the manner of [Yahushua's] advent. The Saviour has warned His people against deception upon this point, and has clearly foretold the manner of His second coming. 'There shall arise false christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. . . . Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, He is in the desert; go not forth; behold, He is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.' Matthew 24:24-27, 31; 25:31; Revelation 1:7; 1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17. This coming there is no possibility of counterfeiting. It will be universally known--witnessed by the whole world.
"Only those who have been diligent students of the Scriptures and who have received the love of the truth will be shielded from the powerful delusion that takes the world captive. By the Bible testimony these will detect the deceiver in his disguise. To all the testing time will come. By the sifting of temptation the genuine Christian will be revealed. Are the people of [Yahuwah] now so firmly established upon His word that they would not yield to the evidence of their senses? Would they, in such a crisis, cling to the Bible and the Bible only? Satan will, if possible, prevent them from obtaining a preparation to stand in that day. He will so arrange affairs as to hedge up their way, entangle them with earthly treasures, cause them to carry a heavy, wearisome burden, that their hearts may be overcharged with the cares of this life and the day of trial may come upon them as a thief.” Great Controversy, pages 624-625.

22. What will those say then, who have maintained their love for the truth?

And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our Eloah, we have waited for Him, and He will save us: this is Yahuwah; we have waited for Him, we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation. Isaiah 25:9.

To be forewarned is to be forearmed; will you now make Yahuwah’s word the standard of your life?
